According to a recent article on AARP, drinking sweetened soda, sweetened tea, and other fruit drinks (not pure juice) increases one's risk for developing type 2 diabetes. A recent study showed that those who drink one or two sugary drinks a day are 26% more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those that drink no daily sweetened drinks. They are also 20% more likely to develop high blood pressure and belly fat.
Is that sweetened drink really worth the increased risk for diabetes and reduced cardiovascular health? Studies indicate that 70% of healthcare costs are related to preventable diseases. That is enormous. Cutting out sweetened soda, tea, and fruit drinks look like a pretty easy way to reduce one's risk of developing a preventable disease.
