One would think that in an economy such as ours and in light of all of the serious health issues we face as a nation and particularly in aging individuals, that plastic surgery would not be so popular. However, Baby Boomers are pushing a surge in the business. The five most popular surgeries were breast augmentation, nose reshaping, liposuction, eyelid surgery, and tummy tucks. Younger women are more likely to undergo breast augmentation while seniors put their money into Botox and liposuction. According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, Botox has increased from 8 percent of all cosmetic procedures five years ago to 15 percent last year. The desire to stay looking young seems to have no age limits.
Most plastic surgery is not covered by insurance; it is often not even permanent. Health insurance might cover surgery when the procedure is medically necessary, such as with skin cancer, when a drooping eye lid is hindering eyesight, or when breast reduction is needed for back problems.
Whether a person chooses to undergo cosmetic surgery for the purpose of looking younger or not, nothing can take the place of good old fashion healthy eating and exercising. Diets high in anti-oxidants (lots of vegetables, fruits, fish, and certain nuts) not only help prevent cell damage but help with brain cognition. Now that is something we all need to be concerned about. As people age and health changes, diet (not necessarily a lose weight type of diet) is vital. There is more at stake than just how we look on the outside. Some choose the Atkins diet, which is low in carbohydrates and high in protein, to lose weight. Check with a dietitian or doctor before embarking on an Atkins diet. If diabetes is an issue, a dietitian can also help in determining the types of foods that need to be eaten or avoided to help with blood sugar stabilization.
While we all want to look good on the outside (it seems to be part of human nature), taking care of ourselves starts on the inside through proper diet, exercise, and yes, even stress management. This is important for a healthy life, especially as we age.
