Many elders are embarrassed to share certain health concerns with even family members, let alone strangers. One 88-year-old elderly woman had a growth on her lower back about the size of a quarter, which actually was turning black. She didn't show her doctor because she knew it needed to be removed and her husband had died. In her mind, she had no one to help her with the bandages, even though nurse aides were available in her independent retirement community. It just didn't occur to her to ask anyone else to help her with bandages. Plus, it didn't show until she purchased a swimming suit for an event for seniors. That is when she showed her daughter who was visiting. Her daughter was horrified and baffled at the excuse that she had no husband to help her with bandages, once the growth was removed. Regularly communicating with aging loved ones and being in contact with their caregivers can mean the difference between health and disease. Never assume there are no hidden problems, just because your elderly parent doesn't come out and announce it. Always ask to be certain.
